Real-Time Server Monitoring: CPU, GPU, Memory, and Network Over SSH

Stop running top, htop, and nvidia-smi in separate terminals. FoxTerm provides real-time system telemetry with beautiful charts — all over a single SSH connection.

MonitoringTelemetryGPUPerformanceDevOps

When managing remote servers, visibility is everything. You need to know: Is the CPU maxed out? Is memory pressure causing swaps? Is the GPU being utilized? Is network bandwidth saturated?

Traditionally, this means running multiple commands (top, htop, nvidia-smi, iftop) in separate terminal windows, parsing text output, and mentally aggregating the data.

FoxTerm automates this by providing real-time system telemetry with visual charts — all over a single SSH connection.

CPU Monitoring

See per-core CPU utilization with detailed breakdown:

  • User — Time spent in user-space processes
  • System — Time spent in kernel-space
  • Idle — Unused CPU capacity
  • IOWait — Time waiting for I/O operations
  • IRQ/SoftIRQ — Interrupt handling
  • Steal — Time stolen by hypervisor (VMs)
  • Guest — Time running virtual machines

Charts update every second, showing trends over time. Spot spikes instantly.

Memory Monitoring

Full virtual memory statistics:

  • Total — Physical RAM capacity
  • Available — Memory available for new processes
  • Used — Currently allocated memory
  • Buffers/Cached — Kernel cache (reclaimable)
  • Swap — Swap space usage
  • Huge Pages — Large page allocation (if enabled)

Identify memory leaks before they cause OOM kills.

GPU Monitoring

This is where FoxTerm stands out. Most monitoring tools ignore GPUs entirely. FoxTerm supports:

NVIDIA (nvidia-smi)

  • GPU utilization (%)
  • Memory used/free
  • Temperature
  • Power draw
  • Process list (which processes are using the GPU)

AMD (amd-smi)

  • GPU usage
  • VRAM allocation
  • Fan speed
  • Temperature

Intel

  • Integrated GPU utilization
  • Memory bandwidth

Monitor GPU-intensive workloads (ML training, video encoding, rendering) without SSH-ing in to run nvidia-smi manually.

Disk I/O

Per-mount-point statistics:

  • Read/write throughput (MB/s)
  • IOPS (operations per second)
  • Latency (average response time)
  • Queue depth

Identify disk bottlenecks before they impact application performance.

Network Monitoring

Per-interface bandwidth tracking:

  • RX/TX bytes per second
  • Packet counts
  • Error rates
  • MTU size

Spot network saturation or packet loss issues in real-time.

Temperature Monitoring

Dual-channel sensor reading:

  • hwmon — Hardware monitoring sensors (CPU, motherboard)
  • thermal_zone — ACPI thermal zones

Automatic CPU sensor detection ensures accurate temperature readings regardless of hardware configuration.

System Stats

High-level system health:

  • Load average — 1, 5, and 15-minute averages
  • Context switches — Per-second rate
  • Boot time — System uptime
  • Process count — Running, sleeping, zombie processes

How It Works

FoxTerm fetches this data by executing lightweight commands over SSH:

  • /proc/stat — CPU statistics
  • /proc/meminfo — Memory information
  • /proc/net/dev — Network interfaces
  • nvidia-smi --query-gpu=... — GPU metrics
  • cat /sys/class/hwmon/... — Temperature sensors

Commands are optimized for minimal overhead. Data is parsed and rendered in FoxTerm's custom ChartUI module.

Why This Matters

Proactive Monitoring: Catch issues before they become outages. See CPU trending upward? Investigate before it hits 100%.

Resource Planning: Understand actual usage patterns to right-size instances. Are you paying for 8 cores but only using 2?

Debugging: Correlate application behavior with system metrics. Did that memory spike coincide with the crash?

Multi-Server Oversight: Monitor multiple servers simultaneously through separate FoxTerm windows. Compare performance at a glance.

The Bottom Line

FoxTerm transforms server monitoring from a CLI chore into a visual dashboard. No more memorizing command flags or parsing text output — just clear, real-time charts that tell you exactly what's happening on your servers.
